Google Earth Pro is now free

Shayne Jacopian for redOrbit.com - Your Universe Online

Have you ever been doodling around on Google Earth for free and thought, “Man, this is so cool, I’d pay $400 for this”? Well, you’re not alone: Google Earth Pro, which was previously available for a $399 per year subscription, is now being offered for free.

Marketed for its data visualization and site planning tools, Google Earth Pro subscriptions from professionals who are willing to pay for the service clearly weren’t doing much for the tech giant, and Google made the decision to make the additional features free for all to use. Whether Google made this decision because the income from subscriptions was insignificant, or as a way to better compete with other free services like Apple Maps, remains unclear.

What does this mean for you? Well, you now have free access to features such as access to demographic data and the ability to create movies within the program. No longer do you have to strap a GoPro to a consumer drone in order to get footage of a city—now you can do it right here, on the application you already use to show your friends, “This is where my buddy lives, isn’t this cool?”

What are you waiting for?! Go download it and spend hours on the site while eating Doritos and forgetting about your responsibilities! Not that we did that...
