It’s no secret that Americans eat too much meat. In fact, we eat 150% of the maximum recommended daily amount. I think an argument can be made to cut back on the meats right off the bat, but also, it’s important to know that processed meats aren’t good for you at all.

Just about every meat product has passed through some kind of chemical process that will extend their shelf life, but things like hot dogs, bratwurst, salami and balogna are the most notorious.


This is one of the most potent and damaging diseases that, while not caused exclusively by processed meat, is still a common and growing result of the dietary practice. Processed meat is full of salt, fat and calories. The salt can lead to water retention, as well as high blood pressure.

Heart disease

600,000 Americans die of heart disease every year. Can you imagine how many people must be alive with it today? There’s three times as much salt in processed meat than in whole meats. High salt intake leads to heart disease and weakened blood vessels.


Sweets aren’t the only way we get Diabetes. Processed meat contains nitrates, which according to diabetic experts, reduces the secretion of insulin and adversely effects blood glucose. Just two slices of salami or a hot dog, one serving of processed meat, eaten daily increases the risk of diabetes by 29%.
