We, the taxpayers, are paying for Michelle Obama’s expensive extended Hawaiian vacation, which the Daily Mail reports will cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. The trip is an early birthday present from President Barack Obama — how generous of him to offer up our tax dollars for “his” gift. Michelle is turning 50 years old on January 17. The White House said that tax dollars will be used to fly Michelle back to Washington, DC on her own private government plane when her vacation concludes. During her Hawaiian stay, she will be at Oprah Winfrey’s 12-bedroom vacation home.
The First Lady’s flight plus the cost of Secret Service personnel, extra security, and transportation will not be cheap. When asked by Fox News’ Ed Henry who is paying for the vacation, White House mouthpiece Jay Carney responded, “As with all personal travel, the first family will appropriately fund personal expenses, Ed. And in line with past presidents and first ladies, the first lady will travel via government aircraft, but you are accurate in your description that this was – her decision to remain in Hawaii – the president’s suggestion that she remain in Hawaii to spend time with friends ahead of this very big birthday.” He continued, “If you have kids, you know that telling your spouse they can spend a week away from home is a big present. Not that we don’t love our kids.” Carney said Michelle will have “standard protection detail… The flight itself wouldn’t be a small passenger jet. It would be a larger military aircraft with room in its hold for cars and SUVs, vehicles that otherwise would have come back with the rest of the family.” Sounds awfully expensive — not something I want to be paying for.
