As Western Journalism recently reported, the release of bombshell internal emails this week has resulted in a renewed interest among Republicans to get to the bottom of 2012’s terrorist attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi. House Speaker John Boehner is reportedly in the process of establishing a select committee, headed by South Carolina Rep. Trey Gowdy, to investigate the administration’s widely criticized response.
Other recent reports indicate Rep. Darrell Issa and his House Oversight Committee has issued a subpoena for Secretary of State John Kerry, who will be compelled to testify at a hearing later this month.
“Compliance with a subpoena for documents is not a game,” Issa wrote in a letter to Kerry. “Because your Department is failing to meet its legal obligations, I am issuing a new subpoena to compel you to appear before the Committee to answer questions about your agency’s response to the congressional investigation of the Benghazi attack.”
Meanwhile, defenders of the Obama administration are growing increasingly perturbed about the new interest into the scandal by Republican legislators.
“There have already been multiple investigations into this issue and an independent Accountability Review Board is mandated under current law,” said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. “For Republicans to waste the American people’s time and money staging a partisan political circus instead of focusing on the middle class is simply a bad decision.”
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi was even more succinct in her opposition to a legitimate discussion of the facts surrounding the attack and murder of four American citizens.
“Diversion, subterfuge, Benghazi, Benghazi, Benghazi,” she complained. “Why aren’t we talking about something else.”
Still, one former White House official might have outperformed all other Democrat competitors in offering the most juvenile response to a very serious matter.
Appearing on Fox News this week, former National Security Council spokesperson Tommy Vietor was asked about the now-discredited talking points used by the administration immediately after the attack.
“Dude, this was like two years ago,” he concluded.
#Dude that was two years ago? Do you think it feels that long to the Woods/Smith/Stevens/Doherty families? #Benghazi

As outraged Americans applaud representatives who are actually looking into the circumstances – and possible cover-up – involved in the Benghazi siege, it is obvious that those beholden to this administration will continue to stonewall any attempt to uncover the truth.
