Cancer cells get drawn to baker’s yeast and self-destruct

Baker’s Yeast and Cancer News(NaturalHealth365) A basic ingredient of bread – baker’s yeast – has provided scientists with incredible insight into understanding basic processes likely involved in diseases such as Parkinson’s and cancer . Brewer’s yeast is rich in nutrients like chromium, B vitamins, protein, selenium, potassium, iron, zinc and magnesium and is considered a probiotic.

In a new study published in the prestigious journal PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Science), researchers detail for the first time a key feature in cellular development linked to the onset of these diseases.

A remarkable protein discovery may benefit cancer patients

The team studied a family of proteins in yeast that are related to a human protein known as DJ-1. Mutations in the human DJ-1 protein cause early-onset inherited and more common forms of Parkinson’s disease. In addition, changes in DJ-1 function are also associated with certain forms of cancer. Using baker’s yeast for continuing their studies is crucial in finding ways to prevent or cure these conditions.

How does baker’s yeast destroy cancer cells?

Researchers have found that cancer cells gravitate to baker’s yeast and then weaken to the point of self-destruction, leading them to further investigate the possibility of not only treating local tumors, but tumors that have spread to the rest of the body without surgery.

Another interesting discovery – research has shown that brewer’s yeast can be effective in preventing antibiotic-associated diarrhea as well as relapsing colitis caused by Clostridium difficile. It is thought that the brewer’s yeast makes enzymes that counteract the effect of toxins produced – so if you are prone to this side effect, consider adding brewer’s yeast if you need to be on a round of antibiotics.

Can my dog benefit from brewer’s yeast?

If your dog is stressed or very hyper – brewer’s yeast can help calm him down. Since brewer’s yeast is a good source of vitamin B complex, your dog will do better with separation anxiety, other stressed induced anxieties and the best part is, brewer’s yeast is palatable to dogs and inexpensive.

Brewer’s yeast also helps dogs stay safe from fleas. You can add some to their food at mealtimes and even sprinkle some on their coats for added benefit.

What is the difference between baker’s yeast and brewer’s yeast?

Baker’s yeast is dried at low temperatures and the yeast are still alive while brewer’s yeast is a by-product that is dried at high temperatures so the yeast is no longer alive.

You may be wondering – should children with autism avoid baker’s yeast? Many children on the autism spectrum have trouble with yeast in general and many physicians have used antifungals to combat the overgrowth of yeast in autistic children.

In fact, some physicians speculate that the yeast in bread is actually more of a concern – so they recommend a gluten-free, yeast free diet. Keep in mind, even though yeast may be helpful for some conditions, autism is not considered to be one of them.

As with any change in supplement or medication, please review this information with your health care practitioner to see if baker’s or brewer’s yeast would be a beneficial addition to your overall health plan.
