School Tell 12-year old Girl To Straighten Her Natural Hair Or Get Expelled ~> Video

Chicks on the Right

This story irked me.

Here's the skinny. Vanessa VanDyke - honor student, violinist, and adorable 12-year old girl with some seriously awesome hair is about to be expelled for said hair from Faith Christian Academy in Orlando, Florida. Why, you ask? Because it's distracting.

This is Vanessa's "distracting" hair, y'all:

Vanessa VanDyke told the station that officials at Faith Christian Academy in Orlando are giving her one week to cut her overgrown hair, which she wears natural, with no styling. If she refuses to cut and shape her hair, the private school, which has rules regarding how students wear their hair, said she is not allowed to attend classes, she told the station.

"I'm depressed about leaving my friends and people that I've known for a while, but I'd rather have that than the principals and administrators picking on me and saying that I should change my hair," VanDyke told the station.

Her mom told the station that she is standing beside her daughter. One of the rules at the school is that hair should not be a distraction to other students. The mother said "a distraction to one person is not a distraction to another."

According to WKMG, Faith Christian Academy has rules governing student hairstyles. The student handbook reads: "Hair must be a natural color and must not be a distraction," and goes on to state examples that include, but are not limited to, mohawks, shaved designs and rat tails.

This is one of the dumbest rules I've seen in a while. Vanessa's hair is obviously naturally like that - it's not like she's permed it, rat-tailed it, mohawked it, or otherwise done anything to it to make it look like it does in all of its spectacular glory - other than grow it out. So, basically, the school is asking her to either cut her hair or pull it back every day, or somehow alter it in a way that'll make it LESS natural.

Now, I don't have hair like hers - mine is annoyingly fine and naturally wavy (irritatingly time-consuming on its own), so I can onlyimagine what it takes to have to tame her hair.

What do y'all want to bet that a BALD dude made this "distracting hair" rule? Honestly.

Furthermore, these administrators would've FLIPPED THE FREAK OUT if they had a class full of my peers in high school in the 80s. You should've SEEN the size of our hair back then. And that was by design. It was about twice the size of this girl's, and it was FLAMMABLE (Aqua Net and White Rain...awwww yeah).

But I'm sure there will be some who will say that this is a private school and they can do what they want. Yadda yadda yadda. And there will be others that say that she should have to wear a purple dress every day is the school deems it so.
