'We've been told to make life as difficult for people as we can'

Even some media outlets who previously have chosen to be very supportive of Barack Obama’s presidency are starting to acknowledge questions about whether the Obama administration’s manipulation of closures during a partial shutdown of the federal government is going too far.
Some of the federal government’s funding ran out earlier this week when Senate Democrats, and Obama himself, refused to discuss with majority Republicans in the House how to best address problems with the Obamacare health care takeover.
The Republicans offered several different suggestions, each time to be slammed by Senate Democrats, who refused even to consider the situation.
So the shutdown happened, but with the flexibility to keep open what is considered “essential” by the government, the Obama administration created a firestorm of negative publicity this week when it ordered rangers to barricade otherwise fully accessible public areas in Washington, including war memorials.
The Washington Times confirmed the Obama strategy with “an angry Park Service Ranger,” who said, “We’ve been told to make life as difficult for people as we can. It’s disgusting.”
The administration has ordered private locations closed, has closed off access to the national cemetery honoring World War II veterans in Normandy, France, closed off a road allowing repair workers access to flood-ravaged Estes Park, Colo., told private vendors near some nationals sites to lock up and go home, and then let loose a Democrat in the House to accuse the Republicans of being on “jihad.”
“The gentleman from California said [the shutdown was hurting] the towns around Yosemite,” ranted Rep. George Miller, D-Calif., on the floor of the House. “Was he thinking about that when he voted to shut down the government? He was prepared to sacrifice the local economy. He was prepared the sacrifice the towns around Yosemite when he was on the jihad against American citizens getting access to health care.”
Miller was then ruled “out of order,” and after he left the floor, Rep. Mike Simpson, R-Idaho, said he was “disgusted” by Miller’s comments.
While the closures of the memorials in Washington, which are already in the open and accessible to passersby and in fact, more costly to close than to leave open because of the special costs for barricades, there have been random shutdowns all over.
